THEWHOLETRUTH 13
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses
its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good
for nothing but to be thrown out and
trampled underfoot bymen” (Matthew 5:13).
PresidingBishopCharlesEdwardBlake has
selected our 2018 theme for theChurchOfGod
InChrist - “TheChurchSeasoning theWorld.”
This year’s significant theme is undergirded by the
words spokenby Jesus to encourageHis disciples
to keep their flavor.
During the time that Jesus spoke thesewords, salt
held amuch higher value than it does today, so
much so that itwas used as a form of currency for
Roman legionnaires. In contrast, the cost associ-
atedwith salt today has a spiritual connotation as
well. Believers are the salt of the earth in thatwe
are the jewels of the earth; the oneswhose under-
standing ofGod is indispensable in application
towards the things ofman.
“The earth is theLord’s, and the fulness thereof;
theworld, and they that dwell therein” (Psalms
24:1). Therefore, followers ofChrist are sprinkled
throughout the earth to give the earth value and
to addflavor to an otherwisemundane situation.
Followers ofChirst ultimately givemeaning to the
purposes and thePlan ofGod (Ephesians 3:10).
Jesus spoke thesewords eluding to the fact that it
is possible to become bland and to reap the conse-
quences of doing so.
No onewants to be thrown out. “Not everyone
who says toMe, ‘Lord, Lord,’shall enter the
kingdom of heaven, but hewho does thewill of
MyFather in heaven” (Matthew 7:21NKJV).
Somewithin the churchwill be displaced and
trampled underfoot. In today’s society that is
surely drifting away fromGod, we have been
made the head andnot the tail, and are above
and not beneath (Deuteronomy 28:13). We are
the seasoning and the light bearers in this gen-
eration, in aworld so full of violence and terror.
We are to bring light into dark situations. Believ-
ers are both salt and light.
“You are the light of theworld.Acity that is set
on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a
lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp-
stand, and it gives light to allwho are in the
house. Let your light so shine beforemen, that
theymay see your goodworks and glorify your
Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
